Understanding Dementia

Course aim
A two day course to gain understanding of different types of dementia and how it affects the brain. To explore communication techniques and responses to behaviour that may be seen as challenging.

Communication and People with dementia

Course Aim
This one day course explores the specific issues around communication. The day provides opportunities for staff to gain understanding and to discuss and practice communication techniques with people with dementia.
Learning Objectives
  • Identify the main principles, concepts and methods of communication
  • Explore and practice these principles to improve effective communication for working with people with dementia
  • Understanding behaviour that may challenge
  • Demonstrate how effective communication supports a person focused way of working with people with dementia
  • Be aware of the importance of effective communication when working with people with dementia and their families

Sexuality and Dementia

Course Aim
A one day course that explores the complexities around sexuality and dementia. Designed for staff working in a variety of settings it allows staff to gain understanding and respond to issues around sexuality and address the challenges for staff that can arise from it.
Learning Objectives
  • To enable staff to engage with the ideas around person hood and sexuality
  • To gain understanding of certain behaviours and how to respond to them
  • Explore practical issues and responses in an open and positive way
  • To challenge and discuss pre-conceived ideas around sexuality and dementia

A Person Centred Approach to Care

Course Aim
A one day course to provide a more in-depth knowledge of dementia, practise skills and explore the issues surrounding a person centred approach to dementia care. This course is suitable for those who have attended the Understanding Dementia course.

  • Engage with the principles of a person centred approach to caring for people with dementia
  • Identify principles such as well being and ill being
  • Explore effective practical communication skills
  • Gain Understanding of behaviour that challenges
  • Explore and support relationships between family and staff

Working with Life Story

Course Aim
A practical one day course that will address issues pertaining to reminiscence and memory. The focus will be on the importance of life story work and the practical ways in which a life story can be put together.
Learning Objectives
  • Engage with the life story of the person with dementia
  • Gain practical guidance on how to produce life story work
  • Explore issues of memory and story telling
  • Gain understanding of person centred principles and life story work

Dementia Training - A guide for Trainers

Course Aim
A two day course that aims to equip staff with the necessary skills to facilitate others to learn about dementia and a person centred approach to care.

  • To enable learners to lead dementia training with others
  • To explore the principles of person centred care
  • Experience and participate in experiential training
  • Understand principles of adult learning
  • To impart information and understanding to staff about dementia
  • To enable the training experience to be translated back into the work environment

Dementia Training for Managers

Course Aim
A one/two day course that is designed for Managers and senior staff, this course will address specific managerial issues around developing staff and promoting the principles of person centred care.

  • To reflect on their practice as a manager of others
  • To develop the staff that they manage within the care setting

Behaviour that may be seen as a Challenge

Course Aim
A one day course that looks at understanding and responding to the behaviour of people with dementia, the training uses the principles of person centred care and looks particularly at communication and the effect of the environment.

  • To explore the reasons behind the behaviour of someone with dementia

Using Montessori Principles in Dementia Care - an introduction

Course Aim
This one day course aims to introduce the developing paradigm of applying Montessorian principles in dementia care. Maria Montessori is well known as a radical educator of children, developing a philosophy of education that centred on the unique qualities of each child and facilitating the child’s innate desire to learn.

In the last 10 years, Dr Cameron Camp, a US based clinical psychologist, has developed a programme of research and procedures that aims to draw on Montessorian principles in engaging with the unique retained abilities of people with dementia to improve their quality of life.

Learning Objectives
  • Review the participants’ understanding of the dementia spectrum.
  • Identify the key issues surrounding memory in the dementia spectrum.
  • Introduce the participant to the Montessorian paradigm as it has been applied to early-years education.
  • Introduce the participant to the work of Dr Cameron Camp in the field of applying Montessorian principles in dementia care.
  • Allow the participant to have an insight into Camp’s methods through case study, practical exercises and role play.

Montessorian Principles in Practice: How can we improve the overall eating experience and mealtimes for people with dementia?

Course Aim
This one day course carries on some of the themes highlighted in "Using Montessori Principles in Dementia Care - an introduction" but focuses on applying the principles in addressing some of the issues around improving the person’s enjoyment of the dining experience. The course focuses on the practicalities surrounding assessing the strengths of a person with dementia within the context of the dining experience, the activities to be used to engage the person and the issue of evaluating the outcomes of such an approach.
Learning Objectives
  • Consider the importance of mealtimes in the lives of people with dementia.
  • Identify and review those factors that go to make up an enjoyable mealtime.
  • Address the balance between negative and positive attributes of the person with dementia in respect of enjoying mealtimes.
  • Selecting the appropriate activity set that addresses these issues.
  • The practicalities - making use of everyday objects in designing activities.
  • Approaches to issues surrounding the activities.
  • Evaluating the utility of the activities in terms of – addressing motor skills, measuring effects on levels of engagement and enjoyment within the day to day dining experience.
